36th Annual DAC Open Tournament Summary
The 2011 DAC Open tournament was completed on Sunday, October, 23, 2011. We had approximately 80 people participate in the three day tourney. Over 50% of the participants were from the Costigan Youth Handball junior’s program and the Colorado School of Mines handball club.
There was great action in all divisions with some repeat winners and some new champions. Jeffery Maklberg slammed the novice division. He beat Jon Gutierrez in the singles (3, (18), 2). Jeffery paired up with Zach Frederick to beat Calib and Cameron Michaels in the doubles (4,8). Two Colorado School of Mines’ players, Joel Barber and Wade (Thomas) O’Rourke battled it out for the C singles title. Joel won the match in a tiebreaker (20), 19, 4. Joel almost pulled off a slam with his doubles partner, Brandon Bush, but they were beaten by Alejandro Ibarra Sr. and Rafael Ibarra (14, 19) in the B/C doubles. Dan Price slammed in the Super Masters. He beat Steve Bauer in the singles (14, 10). Dan and Steve Bauer defeated Terry Nett and Lewis Lambert in the SM doubles 16, (14), 8.
There were numerous tiebreakers in the quarters, semis, and finals of most divisions. The competition was intense, but everyone maintained good attitudes despite some tough defeats. Some of the other winners included Travis Owen in the Open, Tom Marzilli in As, Mike Spier in Bs, Kevin Price and Bear Meiring in Open Doubles, and Wade O’Rourke and Ryan Schaef in C Doubles. Junior’s Summary (from Bob Hickman)
Six junior players participated successfully in this year’s Novice Division. They were joined on Saturday by seven additional players, two moms and one dad for the Juniors Singles and Doubles events.
The Open Singles was won by Jeff Macklberg defeating Jon Gutierrez. Jeff also won the Open Doubles teaming with Kristian Sigloch. Jon and Enrique Duran finished second in the round robin event.
Loyd Eastburn, our team dad, eeked out the victory in the Contender Singles over Fernando Duran. Loyd and Fernando won the doubles with Evan Fruciano and partner Bradley Mannila-Andrus capturing second.
In the girl’s doubles, the moms (Charlene Mannila and Laurie Bizelli) prevailed over their daughters (Brook and Macayla). Charlene defeated her daughter to win the singles event. The moms won this day but the daughters have demanded a rematch!
A special thanks goes out to Costigan Youth Handball, the Guth Foundation and the USHA for all the financial support for this event.
Additional thanks goes to our two instructors who ran the events, Mark Cunningham and Ron Bronner.
The tournament would not be possible without the support of the DAC and their staff. The club remains the premier athletic facility in Colorado and continues its longstanding tradition of hosting great handball tournaments.
John Bannister and Stan Dunlavy extend their thanks to all tournament participants. They would also like to recognize a generous group of people that donated time, money, food, and drinks in order to make this a successful tournament as follows: Costigan Youth Foundation, Colorado Handball Association, Bob Hickman, Ron Bronner, Gene Schneider, Jim Hale, Cindy Miller, Donna Mosely, Rick Wheelock, Greg Oyler, Michael Vezina, Dan Price, Steve Bauer, Stan Dunlavy, Plotter Supplies, InCheck, Half Fast Subs, and Anthony’s Pizza.
